As you can see, oxygen is constantly being used up and carbon dioxide is constantly being produced. This happens whenever living things respire or when things burn. However, the amount of oxygen in the air does not decrease. The amount of carbon dioxide in the air does not increase either. How is this possible?
In a typical day, an average person breathes in and out up to 13 000 litres of air. this would fill abaut 50000 drink cans.
The answer lies with plants. plants are responsible for maintaining the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air. Plants take in carbon dioxide from their surroundings during photosynthesis. At the same time, oxygen is produced and released in to the surroundings. this exchange of gases happens continuously and helps to keep a healthy balance of oxygeen and carbon dioxide in the air.
